A testimony of Happiness

What more happiness a teacher would have than to witness his / her students achieve great heights. I am a happy person today because my students have achieved in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) sponsored, Gautam Budha University (GBU) Off Road Battle – 2016. Our students have secured the fifth place in the National level and the first place in the Safety Measures Category. Such achievements do not happen on a single day. An intense motivation of the staff members, team effort of the students and the optimism and generosity of the college have to integrate in a perfect manner. That is what had happened in Annai Vailankanni College of Engineering.
In, 2015, The students of Mechanical Engineering, designed and developed 2 race cars, in just 28 days. The college management highly appreciated their efforts and our Chairman awarded them a cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000. The race cars were launched in a grand ceremony, amidst renowned scholars and media personnel. The recognition gained at our College, ignited the competitive spirit in our students, to participate in National Car Races. We came to know about the SAE- GBU National off Road Battle- 2016. A team of 25 students came together in the name ‘Team Wyvern,’ under the guidance of Assistant Professors Mr. Bennitto. F. Hennessy and I. Mr. Nagendran imparted technical assistance to the students. We applied for the competition and submitted our design and cost report. Our submission successfully completed the phase 1 and 2 verification. The verification fee for the phases 1 and 2 was Rs. 10000 and Rs. 16000 respectively. The estimate for the designed vehicle was Rs. 1. 40 lakh.
Our students developed the vehicle. It was trial run in the track created in our College ground. The ‘Team Wyvern’ , comprising 25 boys and girls of Mechanical Engineering, along with Mr. Bennito. F. Hennessy and I, participated in the GBU Off Road Battle, New Delhi. Our team qualified the preliminary round. Only 18 teams among the 85 could qualify the prelims. We completed the acceleration test and the brake test within 10.1 seconds, securing the second position. 5 teams were disqualified in that round. During the ‘Pull the Bull’ round, there arose some problem in the clutch plate. Our chairman’s words of encouragement helped us to overcome the distress. Our students worked on the clutch plate and it was repaired. Finally we finished the race at 5th place and in the safety measures round, we got the 1st place. With great joy we returned.
To our surprise, our chairman Mr. Peter Jesudhas, Correspondent Mr. Maria Victor, Principal Dr. Ramasubramanian, along with the Vice- Principal, Dean of Academic Affairs, various heads of the department, staff and students gave us a royal welcome at Nagercoil Railway station. Adding to the delight, our chairman awarded a cash prize of Rs. 50000 and encouraged us to continue the good job.
I’m very sure that our students have acquired great skill in the automotive field. They have learned to assemble and dismantle a car, diagnose and rectify errors and as a culmination, to design and develop a race car. They have also acquired the team management and financial management skills. I conclude by stating the proverb I personally experienced while working in this project. “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”
