AVCE NSS camp activities at Kottaram

NSS has given us a platform to serve the society and bring happiness and smile on many faces. A special NSS camp of AVCE students was organized from 27.02.2017 to 05.03.2017. This year the theme of NSS Special camping is “Youth for Sustainable development with special focus on watershed management”.


The village adopted was on the outskirts of Kottaram panchayat, Kannyakumari district.

The Camp was inaugurated on 27.02.2017 at 9:30am by the Chief Guest Mr. Neelakantan, Headmaster, Government Higher Secondary school, Kottaram and presided over by Dr. P. Senthil kumar, Principal, Annai Vailankanni college of Engineering. The Health inspector of Kanyakumari and ex officials of the panchayat were invited as special guests. Health Inspector of Kanyakumari gave a talk on the awareness on diseases spread over by contaminated water, and uncleanliness. His speech urged the NSS volunteers to spread awareness among the public. Er. N. Rahul the Ex. Camp officer delivered welcome address and thanked the special guests for their inputs.


Day 1 Activities - Plastic waste removal and Awareness campaign

The activities included removal of polythene wastes by volunteers from various parts of Kottaram panchayat and were properly disposed. After lunch, the NSS volunteers participated in an awareness campaign cum seminar about the demerits and health issues of using banned plastics to the general public of around 40 families.


Day 2 Activities - Locality cleanup and Hygiene awareness campaign

The volunteers proceeded to field work by 7:00am to the Primary health center at Arumughapuram for cleaning the locality and make it hygienic. Dr. Midhun, Medical officer inaugurated the program and greeted the volunteers for executing the social commitment. Volunteers with the support of public cleaned the entire locality and burned the paper and tree wastes. The volunteers distributed pamphlets on importance of maintaining hygiene in our day to day to activities to stay away from diseases.

Post lunch, by 3:00pm, the volunteers organized an awareness programme on Hygiene for the people of the locality with more than 100 participating. Mr. V. Selvamurugan, Health Inspector of Kottaram was the Guest of honor for the program and he insisted the importance of being self-hygienic and steps to be followed to keep our place hygienic. Volunteers played a short drama addressing the importance of being hygienic, and stop urinating and toileting in public places.


Day 3 Activities - Water resources cleanup, Tree plantation and awareness program
   
Day 3 marked the importance on maintaining our ponds and lakes being our most valuable natural resources. The day was dedicated by the volunteers to clean the water sheds across Kottaram and making it useful for the people around it. Following which the volunteers insisted on the importance of planting trees across the house holds of the kottaram panchayat and have planted 100 trees in the households of Kottaram under the theme “One Tree in each home”.

Post lunch the volunteers organized an awareness programme on maintaining the water sheds and cleaning the lakes on regular basis and insisted not to dispose any wastes in the ponds/lakes/watershed because these resources are going to be of utmost importance for human livelihood. Also the volunteers spread awareness on planting a tree across each household. This program was carried as a door to door activity. The Dean of Annai Vailankanni college of Engineering Dr. S. Chella Kumar Rose participated in the program with volunteers.


Day 4 Activities - Free Eye and Dental Medical camp

At 10:00am the Medical team from Bejansingh eye hospital and Government Dental College have arrived for free Eye and Dental camp organized for the needy in and around kottaram at NNCR auditorium. The camp began with a welcome address by Er. J. Prabhu Camp Officer. The Medical camp began at 10:30am benefiting nearly 145 people; they were provided with free medical checkup and medicines as per medical records and examination; the patients requiring immediate medical attention was advised to be brought to hospital.

Post lunch the camp volunteers have provided free digital education to school going kids and senior people.


Day 5 Activities - Traffic awareness campaign

The traffic awareness campaign was conducted at Vivekanadapuram, Kannyakumari on 03/03/2017. Shri. Antony, the traffic Inspector of Kanyakumari was the chief guest and inaugurated the awareness camp. He instructed the traffic rules to be followed and being NSS volunteers it is also the responsibility of youth to spread the awareness. He inaugurated by distributing pamphlets, and warning the riders without helmet and seatbelt and made them to wear accordingly which in turn was continued by the volunteers. The campaign lasted for 5 hours with the support from traffic police of Kanyakumari.

The camp report was presented by NSS Volunteer Manira. Mr. Ravisankar,  Zone coordinator of TCS Ion and Mr. Vincent Jain, Director of Research and Development, Annai Vailankanni college of Engineering were the chief guest honoring the winners of cultural programmes and camp winners.
