Science Carnival 2017 was conducted at Annai Vailankanni College of Engineering on 14.7.2017 in order to provide the necessary platform for students from schools in Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts to exhibit their innate talents. Dr. D. Peter Jesudas, the Chairman of the college, presided over the function. Dr. Justin Thanaraj, Head of the Department of Chemistry, Anna University of Technology, Nagercoil inaugurated the carnival and formally opened the Science exhibition on the theme “Sustainable Energy”.

Students of Std. VI, VII, VIII, IX and XI from schools in Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts exhibited their projects. The solar tricycle, the on-road and off-road race cars and the model boat designed and developed by the students of Annai Vailankanni College of Engineering were also exhibited. Students from various schools in Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts visited the exhibition. Prizes were awarded to top three exhibits in each standard.

Eighty nine teams from various schools participated the Quiz competition for Std. XI students on the topic “Fundamentals of Sciences”. Mr. S. Anandhan, Senior Scientist, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant served as the quiz master. In the final round with six teams, Alphonza Matric Higher Secondary School, Nagercoil, Atomic Energy Central School, Kudankulam and S.N.M. Hindu Vidyalaya Matric Higher Secondary School won the first, second and third prizes respectively.
Essay competition for Std. IX students on the topic “Wealth from Waste”, both in English and Tamil was conducted. In English, Amrita Vidyalayam Kanyakumari, S.R.K. International School Kulasekharam and Harvard Hi-tech Matric Higher Secondary School Navalady won the first, the second and the third prizes respectively. In Tamil S.R.K.B.V. Matric Higher Secondary School Kulasekharam, D.M.N.S. Sivanthi Adithanar School Navalady and N.V.C. Govt. Higher Secondary School Radhapuram won the first, the second and the third prizes respectively.
Mr. P. Pandaram, Member Secretary, Public Awareness Division, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant delivered the valedictory address and gave away the cash awards, first prize Rs. 3,000/-, second prize Rs. 2,000/- and third prize Rs. 1,000/- amounting to Rs. 48,000/- for all the events and the certificates to the winners as well as the participants.
